Algarve Artists Network’s “Blue Planet” exhibition

The Museum of Portimão opens on Saturday, July 5th, at 5:00 pm, the exhibition “Planeta Azul”, by the Algarve Artists Network (AAN). On display at this cultural facility until September 28, the exhibition, composed of paintings and sculptures, addresses the beauty of life and nature on planet Earth, while drawing attention to the fragility of the environment.
The proposal of the Algarve Artists Network, now materialized in an exhibition, is to show the richness of a natural beauty that has long characterized the region and that has made it a unique destination, but also to promote awareness of the need to preserve a valuable natural resource, among the public: water.
The purity of the colors of the ocean and wetlands has always been a source of inspiration for artists, as well as attracting art lovers. With countless shades of blue, which can range from translucent aquamarine to gloomy and dark indigo blue, “water, in its various forms, also reflects life, like a shining mirror, in the tragedies of fires or in the purest white of icebergs”, contextualizes the AAN.
The importance of water, as an indispensable resource for the life of all species, is the reason for this alert in the form of art, where “the conservation of this resource, which depends in part on the change in human habits”, adds the collective.
In a region with strong connections to the sea, such as the Algarve, the exhibition composed of the plural vision of the 13 artists of the AAN, conveys a clear message about the urgency of preserving this resource, moving it away from sources of pollution, while, in parallel, the ocean, rivers and lakes must be valued. It is for this reason that the paintings and sculptures will remind visitors that everyone’s daily action is vital.
The AAN collective is composed of Beata Palach, Birte Proettel, BJ Boutler, Brigitte von Humboldt, Claire Lloyd Bown, João Pinto, Jutta Mertens-Kammler, Kerstin Wagner, Lotti Klink, Rosa Pereira, Silvia Cavelti, Thea Booijink and Vera Christians.
These artists, who have made the Algarve their “home”, consider that civil society needs to react and should seek to contribute to safeguarding the environment and the beauty of this territory. It is therefore no coincidence that they call on everyone to “see” the effects of human behavior on aquatic life, birds and organisms that live on the seabed.
The exhibition “Planeta Azul”, open until September 28, is promoted by the Algarve Artists Network, with the support of the Municipality of Portimão.
It can be visited on Tuesdays, from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm, and from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. However, between July 15 and August 31, the Museum’s opening hours change to adapt to the summer season, with longer hours, being open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
The cultural facility is closed on Mondays and national holidays, and it is also worth mentioning the free admission for residents in national territory on Sundays.
