Photography and Textile Panels Exhibition at CMTG

“Photographs Musicadas II, 2025”, is the title of Maria João Cerol’s exhibition, which will open on February 14, at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

These are 14 images captured in different spaces and moments, in which a certain balance between shapes and colors is sought.

As a kind of “tribute”, a tribute is made to people and/or institutions that definitively marked the life of Maria João Cerol, from a musical and human point of view.

Each photograph was associated with a “Study” for Transverse Flute, as well as a Textile Panel.

“Photographs Musiced II” (14 photographs and 14 textile panels).

Compositions by Amílcar Vasques-Dias, Christopher Bochmann, Eurico Carrapatoso, Jorge Salgueiro, Manuel Pedro Ferreira, Nicholas Jones, Pedro Carimbo, Pedro Serpa and Vasco Pearce de Azevedo will be performed on the transverse flute.

Maria João Cerol was born in Lagos, on the day that celebrates the municipal holiday (São Gonçalo day), 400 years after D. Sebastião elevated Lagos to City.

In 1986 he went to the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1º de Maio, in the Conde Ferreira building (Primary School until 1980), where he learned to play the transverse flute with the conductor, José António Flosa. In 1988 she was registered as student number one at the Academia de Música de Lagos. From 1991 onwards he began to study at the School of Music of the National Conservatory of Lisbon (Convento do Carmo, Bairro Alto), in the Transverse Flute class of Iwona Saiote (Basic Course) and later of Carlos Franco (Complementary Course).

Degree in Musical Sciences from the New University of Lisbon, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, in 1999. She was a collaborator at the Lagos Music Academy and the Portimão Conservatory between 1999 and 2018, where she introduced the “Children’s Flute Method” (which she designed for children between 4 and 9 years old) and founded the “Ensemble de Flautas Vicentino”. From 2018 to 2023 she was a teacher of Transverse Flute (Integrated Teaching) at Escola EB 2, 3 José Buísel, Portimão. She is currently a Contract Teacher of Music Education at the Bemposta School Group, Portimão.

She performs regularly in Solo Recitals and with her husband, the pianist João Luís Rosa.

In Fine Arts, between 1995 and 2015, he dedicated himself to Collages and received, among others, the Professor Reynaldo dos Santos Prize (ex-aequo), in 1998. In the solo exhibitions, he had the collaboration, with unpublished texts, of several Portuguese Writers, such as Lídia Jorge, Casimiro de Brito, Matilde Rosa Araújo, Alice Vieira and José Jorge Letria, among others.

In Photography, from 2020, he presented the “Exhibition of Musicated Photographs”, with compositions for transverse flute by Armando Mota, Hugo Maia, Jorge Salgueiro, Manuel Pedro Ferreira, Nuno Sequeira Rodrigues, Pedro Louzeiro and Tiago Cutileiro. At the moment he presents “Photographs Musicadas II” (14 photographs and 14 textile panels).

On March 7 at 4:00 pm, the closing will also feature transverse flute recital.
