World Press Photo 2025

This year the city of Portimão is once again the first to present the exhibition in Portugal, between July 20 and August 10, in the space of Antiga Lota, curated by the Associação Cultural Música XXI.
The annual Contest promoted by the World Press Photo Foundation recognizes and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced in the last year. This year’s 42 winning photographs from the 68th World Press Photo Contest were selected from 59,320 images by 3,778 photographers from 141 countries.
In the midst of the rapidly changing global political and media landscape such as the year 2024 and which continues to this day, the award-winning images invite visitors to this exhibition to look beyond the traditional news cycle, often driven by questionable interests, to which we are usually subject and to engage in stories from all over the world, that stand out and that are simultaneously sometimes forgotten or ignored.
They are stories of struggle and challenge, but also warmth and courage — visually stunning works that deepen the narratives behind the headlines. Selected by an independent international jury for their visual quality and commitment to diverse representation, the 2025 exhibition is above all enriching, highlighting the power of photojournalism and documentary photography, offering an opportunity for reflection in times of urgency.
The 42 winning photographs were selected by an independent jury during the months of January and February 2025.
The winning image of the Photo of the Year 2025 award is by Palestinian photographer Samar Abu Elouf, from Doha, taken for The New York Times, and where you can see Mahmoud Ajjour, a 9-year-old Palestinian child who was seriously injured while fleeing an Israeli attack on Gaza, having lost both arms.
Opening hours: Visitable daily, from 18:00 to 00:00.
