World Press Photo 2024

This year, Portimão is once again the first Portuguese city to host this exhibition. The annual World Press Photo contest recognizes and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced in the last year.

Selected from more than 61,000 entries, this year’s photographs depict devastating conflicts, political upheavals, the climate crisis and the safe passage of migrants. The award-winning works document some of the most pressing issues facing the world.

By bringing together such important stories, this exhibition encourages greater understanding and awareness of the events plaguing the world, as well as reinforcing the need for press freedom in every corner of the world.

The 24 winners, six honorable mentions and two special jury mentions were selected by an independent jury from 61,062 entries from 3,851 photographers from 130 countries.  Of these, the jury of the 2024 contest selected these four global winners:

“War is Personal”

This year, Portimão is once again the first Portuguese city to host this unique exhibition. In a joint initiative of the Associação Cultural Música XXI and the Municipality of Portimão, it can be visited free of charge, between July 28 and August 18, in the building of the old Portimão Fish Market, between 18:00 and 00:00, every day.
