“The French Film of the Month” Cycle

January 30 - September 25

Free

The Museum of Portimão once again shows the best of the Gallic directors production, through the initiative “The French Film of the Month”, which is back in the city on January 30 and will last until September, always with free admission.

Promoted jointly by the Alliance Française do Algarve and the Group of Friends of the Museum of Portimão (GAMP), this cycle of French cinema, in addition to disseminating to the Algarve public the great cinematographic successes in the language of Molière, is also intended to attract the many French people who increasingly live or spend holidays in the Algarve, allowing them to learn about regional history and heritage.

The first film of this new cycle is entitled “Libre Garance”, was directed by Lisa Diaz in 2022 and will be screened on January 30, starting at 9:00 pm, in the auditorium of the Museum of Portimão.

This drama, lasting 1h36 minutes, takes place in the summer of 1982 and presents us with the story of an eleven-year-old child, Garance, who lives in the village of Cévennes with his parents, a couple with an alternative life. The plot develops when two Italian activists rob a nearby bank and the robbery goes wrong. This episode shakes the lives of young Garance and his family, respectively.

All films are screened on the last Thursday of the month and in the original French version, with subtitles in Portuguese and on the following dates: January 30 – “Libre Garance“, by Lisa Diaz; February 27 – “Revenir“, by Jessica Talud; March 27 – “César et Rosalie” by Claude Sautet; April 24 – “Chien de la casse“, by Jean-Baptiste Durand ; May 22 – “Un vrai bonhomme“, by Benjamin Parent; June 26 – “Le cours de la vie“, by Frédéric Sojcher; and September 25 – “La fille de son père“, by Erwan Le Duc. During the months of July and August there will be no screenings and for reasons of force majeure, the scheduled dates may change.

The Alliance Française do Algarve, whose headquarters are located in Faro, is a private association whose object is the dissemination of the French language and culture, with part of its activities being the teaching of the Portuguese language to francophones, in addition to carrying out French exams and translations, among other actions.

In March 2018, the entity decided to extend its presence to the western Algarve and established a partnership protocol with GAMP, aiming to strengthen friendly and cultural ties with the local associative fabric, thanks to which the “French Film of the Month” cycle began to take place in Portimão, while promoting Portuguese classes for francophones residing in the municipality, through a partnership established with the Parish Council of Portimão.
