“Prehistory in the Moonlight – Summer Solstice”

June 21

.

The Museum of Portimão organizes, on the 21st of June, between 19:00 and 00:30, the initiative “Prehistory in the Moonlight – Summer Solstice”, which will take place in the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar.

This cultural event, with free access, but with consumption subject to payment, aims to mark the Summer Solstice, providing participants with an experience that crosses the prehistoric archaeological heritage of Alcalar with contemporary expressions of music, light and scientific knowledge.

The initiative aims to strengthen the appreciation and dissemination of this archaeological site, while promoting community life, artistic enjoyment and the sharing of historical and scientific knowledge.

Program

19h00 – 21h40 | Reception to the public and musical entertainment
The event begins with a reception for visitors in a relaxed atmosphere in the late afternoon, with ambient music by a guest DJ. Enjoyment and rest areas will be available with sun loungers, bean bags, tables and chairs, providing a pleasant space to watch the sunset.

During this period, visitors will also be able to enjoy a varied offer of gastronomy and drinks (consumption subject to payment), with emphasis on:

  • A FAINA Restaurant (Museum of Portimão), with gastronomic proposals linked to the sea and land, as well as a selection of wines from the Algarve;

  • MARAFADA, with locally produced craft beers, including a beer created based on ingredients that are believed to have been used in Prehistory;

  • Cabeço da Eira Distillery (Mexilhoeira Grande), with arbutus spirits, regional liqueurs and gin produced in the region.

9:45 pm | Choral and Instrumental Show
This is followed by a performance by the Adágio Choir Group, from the Portimão Music Academy, which will present a choral and instrumental repertoire (piano) with works by composers from the Romantic period. This performance will integrate elements of light and sound, providing a moment of aesthetic enjoyment in the architectural framework of the megalithic monuments.

10:30-02:30 | Astronomical observation
The Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos will promote an astronomical observation session, open to the public and integrated in an informal meeting of telescopes. Participants are asked to bring their own equipment if they wish.

During the night, there will also be two guided tours of the monuments, led by archaeologists specialized in the history of Alcalar, who will provide a historical-cultural contextualization, addressing the connection between astronomical cycles and the social practices of prehistoric communities.
