Launch of the book “Snapshots of the Past”, by António Marreiros

May 17

Throughout this month of May, the Museum of Portimão is marking 16 years of existence at the service of local memory and identity with a set of activities, of which the launch of the book “Snapshots of the Past”, by António Marreiros, stands out.

On the anniversary day, May 17, at 6:00 pm, the auditorium of the Museum of Portimão hosts the launch of the book “Snapshots of the Past”, by António Marreiros.

This activity is part of the commemorative program of the centenary of the city of Portimão and should be attended by the author, who, through poetry, photography and painting, has recorded the daily life of Mexilhoeira Grande, the village where he was born in January 1932.

António da Silva Marreiros, a barber by profession, whose human understanding, artistic curiosity and affectionate recognition of his roots, led him to record versatilely through photography, poetry and painting, what the eye achieves and the heart senses. For decades he was interested in the daily life of Mexilhoeira Grande, the village where he grew up, as well as the surrounding geographies. The people who crossed his path through the streets of every day, or on weekend walks, the activities, the poetry of gestures, the landscapes, the paths, the ceremonies and festivities. This work is an echo of what profoundly composes him, of his history, of human, existential and social considerations in relation to what surrounds him.

To know the work of António da Silva Marreiros is to perceive the sublime aesthetics existing in the routine of everyday life that, over the years, also gives rise to a document with historical and ethnographic value related to the ways of life of a people, today a way of (re)knowing geographies and landscapes, of remembering its people and of valuing its heritage heritage.

António da Silva Marreiros is unpretentiously an important spokesperson for the culture of the municipality of Portimão, a condition that is intended to be underlined and honored by presenting Snapshots of the Past.
