Conference “Prisons and detention regimes in Portugal: before and after 1974”

April 19 - April 20

Free

As part of the exhibition “The Portuguese prison project”, which will start on April 19, at the Museum of Portimão, a conference will take place that will address the theme of prisons, prison regimes and prison life before the 1974 revolution. Three contributions deal with politically imprisoned people and their living conditions, a first about the prisoners of the Algarve, a second more generally about the prison regimes during the time of the fascist government in Portugal, and a third gives the floor to a resistance fighter and contemporary witness. Finally, the prison conditions of non-political prisoners in conservative Portugal before the 1974 revolution are analysed.

In the second part of the first day of the conference, the objectives, ideas of previous projects and exhibitions will be presented, along with information about the exhibition that will be inaugurated. The two photographers talk about their approach and their images.

Some results of a research project on visitors carried out during two previous exhibitions will also be discussed.

The second day of the conference, 20 April, will focus on the influence of the 1974 revolution on prison conditions and the development of prison regimes in Portugal. In addition to the representatives of the Portuguese prison administration, representatives of national and international observation bodies (NPM; CPT; SPT) take the floor.

To participate in this free conference, prior registration is required. Those interested can consult the program and register here.
