Conference “Philosophy in the City” by Alexandre Franco de Sá

May 10

This year’s edition of the Philosophy in the City Conference, organized annually by the Philosophy group of Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School, will have as its theme: “A Guerra justa: um paradigma em collapsio?”

The guest lecturer, Professor Alexandre Franco de Sá, is an assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Coimbra, author of several publications in philosophical journals and several books, having won the União Latina/FCT Scientific Translation Award, in 2003, for the collective translation of the work Holzwege, by Martin Heidegger, and the FLUC/Teaching Award, in 2020, for teaching excellence at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra.

The conference will focus on a topic that is unfortunately on the agenda – war – in a philosophical approach that will revisit the thinking of some leading philosophers on the subject.

The session will begin with the screening of the short film “Limbo”, directed by the brothers Marcos and Marcelo Silva based on an original screenplay by Miguel Coelho as part of a master’s degree in cinema at the School of Social Communication, in which a soldier killed in combat “wakes up” in a room to be judged, in a dialogue that questions ethical issues and the meaning of being “human”.

This will be followed by the conference itself and the irreplaceable debate with the spectators.
