Free

Throughout this month of May, the Museum of Portimão is marking 17 years of existence at the service of local memory and identity with a set of activities, of which “A day in Prehistory”, held on May 3rd, the 25th Photographic Race, the launch of the reissue of the book “Flavors of Algarve Cuisine”, by José Vila and the inauguration of the exhibition “Colors of the Land and the Sea”, by José Vila.

25th Portimão Photographic Race

In a very special edition, the 25th Portimão Photographic Race, which takes place between May 16th and 17th, aims to celebrate and evoke the spirit of the debut of this event, held in 2001. This year’s proposal is the re-edition of two modalities, seeking to recall this model of running. Registration is open until May 14. Participants can register, in one of the two modalities in the competition, at the Museum’s reception or through the online address https://shorturl.at/ojDsY, where the Regulation, the prizes and the rules of participation can be consulted.

Launch of the book “Sabores da Cozinha Algarvia”

In this new reissue of his book “Sabores da Cozinha Algarvia”, edited by Clube do Autor S.A., whose launch will take place in the auditorium of the Museum of Portimão, at 4:00 pm, on May 17th, José Vila continues to propose us a journey through the Algarve’s gastronomy, through the numerous recipes he presents.

It is a perfect connection of the products of the land and the sea that this book offers us.

Exhibition “Colors of the Land and the Sea”

For 17:00 pm, the opening of the exhibition “Colors of the Land and the Sea by José Vila (1944-2021) is scheduled, which presents us with a retrospective journey of his 64 years of activity as a painter, from his first painting at the age of 13, in 1957, to his last works in 2021, at the age of 77.

His artistic creativity, present in this exhibition, curated by José Gameiro, was soon characterized by freedom in the use and application of colors and a diversity of mixture of tones, textures and materials, expressing his emotions and experiences through an informalist language, breaking with any figurative representation. Free, vigorous and expressive brushstrokes restore her spontaneity, without rigid rules or concerns with traditional aesthetics, valuing above all the energy of the movement of her gestures in the creative process.

“Singing Happy Birthday to the Museum” by IsmaTuna.

At 18:00 pm, the Museum of Portimão will share the birthday cake with the population and many surprises will follow accompanied by the voices of IsmaTuna, who will sing “Happy Birthday to the Museum”.

International Museum Day

Every year, on May 18, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) organizes International Museum Day (ICOMM), a global event that highlights the dynamic role of museums in the service of the cultural development of societies.

This year’s theme will be “The Future of Museums in rapidly changing communities” with special emphasis on three sub-themes: Intangible Heritage; Youth and New Technologies.

Inaugurated on May 17, 2008, the Museum of Portimão has fulfilled its main mission, by assuming itself as a permanent social observatory and laboratory of ideas and stories, a bridge between past and future, and a decisive meeting point for the discovery, knowledge and enjoyment of cultural and natural heritage.
