16th Anniversary of the Museum of Portimão

May 17 - May 18

Throughout this month of May, the Museum of Portimão is marking 16 years of existence at the service of local memory and identity with a set of activities, of which “A day in Prehistory”, scheduled for the 11th, the already traditional Photo Race, a “Sunset Party” with DJ, and a projection of images on the windows of the Museum building.

On the anniversary day, May 17, at 6:00 pm, the auditorium of the Museum of Portimão hosts the launch of the book “Snapshots of the Past”, by António Marreiros. This activity is part of the commemorative program of the centenary of the city of Portimão and should be attended by the author, who, through poetry, photography and painting, has recorded the daily life of Mexilhoeira Grande, the village where he was born in January 1932.

At 7:30 pm, the Museum of Portimão will share the “surprise” birthday cake with the population, followed by a “Sunset Party” with a DJ on the Marion 2 crane, scheduled for 8:00 pm and accompanied by a projection of lights and images on the windows of the building.

On the following day, May 18th, International Museum Day, starting at 10:00 am, the starting signal will be given for the face-to-face modality of the 24th Portimão Photographic Race, inspired by the centenary of the elevation to the category of city, which took place in 1924 on the initiative of the then President of the Republic, the illustrious Portimão Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

Under the theme “100 Years of the City”, and evoking the close relationship between the distinguished writer and his homeland, participants will be confronted with six short excerpts, taken from his literary work, motivating as many photographic records, which must be captured in Portimão.

International Museum Day, created by ICOM and celebrated annually on May 18, serves as a global platform to promote the role of museums in cultural exchange and development.

This year’s theme will be “Museums for Education and Research” and, as in previous years, admission will be free to the Museum of Portimão and the Reception and Interpretation Center of the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar.

Inaugurated on May 17, 2008, the Museum of Portimão has fulfilled its main mission, by assuming itself as a permanent social observatory and laboratory of ideas and stories, a cultural bridge between past and future, and a decisive meeting point for the discovery, knowledge and enjoyment of the local heritage.
