8th Conference in Portimão “The Power of Museums and Heritage”

“The Power of Museums and Heritage” is the theme of the 8th RMA Conference – Algarve Museum Network, which will take place in Portimão, on November 14, from 9:00 am, in the Júlio Bernardo auditorium, of the Museum of Portimão.

The opening session will be attended by the Mayor of Portimão (Álvaro Bila), the Vice-Rector of the University of Algarve (Nuno Bicho), the coordinator of the Portuguese Network of Museums/Museums and Monuments of Portugal, (Fátima Roque), the president of ICOM Portugal (David Felismino) and the Portuguese Association of Museology – APOM (João Neto), with the moderator, Isabel Soares, Head of the Museums and Heritage Division of the Museum of Portimão.

The inaugural conference will be presented by José Gameiro, from the Coordinating Group of the Algarve Museums Network, will have as its theme “The Power of Museums and Heritage” and will feature the interventions of the museologist Clara Frayão Camacho, the landscape architect and writer, José Carlos Barros and the Executive Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins.

This is followed by the second panel on “The Museological and Heritage Challenges”, moderated by Hugo Oliveira, from the Coordinating Group of the Algarve Museum Network, which will feature the contributions of Rita Rato (Director of the Aljube Museum) and Tânia Reias (Director of the Hat Museum). This panel will also be attended by Vera Freitas, archaeologist, from the Museum of Portimão, Ismael Medeiros, archaeologist, from the municipality of Lagoa, José Bettencourt, Head of the CNANS Division, Pedro Barros, archaeologist – CNANS and Frederico Tátá, director of the Culture Unit (CCDR Algarve) who will talk about the “Musa Project – Musealization of the Archaeological Finds of Arade”.

In the afternoon, there will be a new round table, this time with the theme “Civil Society, Heritage and Active Citizenship”, moderated by Catarina Oliveira, from the Coordinating Group of the Algarve Museums Network, and having as guests, Luísa Ricardo (PCI Group), João Sequeira (EDU Group), Ana Martinho (CR Group), Alexandra Pires (ARQ Group), Alberto Melo, Priscila Soares (IN LOCO Association), José Sousa (IPSIIS Project) and Susana Gómez (Mértola Archaeological Site).

The final reflections will be in charge of Marco Lopes, from the RMA Coordinating Group, Dália Paulo, from the Municipal Museum of Loulé and Sandra Pereira, Vice-President of the Municipality of Portimão.
