Exhibition “Black and White” at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes

November 8 - December 6
Free

The exhibition “A Preto e Branco” opens on November 8, at 4:00 pm, at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, in an initiative promoted by the author Agostinho Jorge to mark the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence.

Composed of 21 paintings with charcoal drawings, the exhibition reflects the interaction between the occupying and the native people, while revealing 500 years of mutual influence. The works were created at the end of 1975 by Agostinho Jorge, at a time when Angola was experiencing the last moment of its independence.

Five decades later, the author decided to bring his works to the “light of day” in an exhibition that also includes, in addition to the paintings, original documents from the three liberation movements, namely government programs, flags, newsletters and pamphlets.

Agostinho Jorge was born on December 22, 1956, in Bibala, Moçâmedes (Angola), where he attended secondary school and lived until August 27, 1975, when he arrived in Portugal. He lived in the Lisbon region until the end of 1986 and, during this period, completed higher education.

The following year he moved to Portimão, the city where he lives to date. Professionally, he collaborated with private companies in the region and held positions in the Municipality of Portimão. Currently, married and father of three children, he is retired and in his leisure time enjoys collecting, music, dancing and fishing.

“A Preto e Branco” focuses on a phase in Agostinho Jorge’s life when he moved to Portugal. At the age of 18, he had just arrived from Angola and all the events he had experienced were present in his mind. He was trying to understand what the future could be, in a land completely different from his own.

As a way of paying homage to his peoples, both the one who saw him born and the one who received him, he took pencil and paper and created drawings that show the interaction between both communities. The works were all created on the table of the “Nova Mina” pastry shop, in Amadora, while watching on a television, in black and white, the news that arrived from Angola about the independence of that country.
